How to use this tool

  1. Paste the text and choose removal or collapse mode.
  2. Decide whether whitespace-only lines should count as empty and whether line edges should be trimmed.
  3. Run the cleanup and check that paragraph or record boundaries remain clear.

Formula & method

Remove empty lines drops only lines containing no characters. Remove whitespace-only lines also drops spaces or tabs. Collapse mode retains one blank separator from a sequence of blank lines. Optional trimming applies to each line first.

A practical example

A paragraph followed by three blank lines and another paragraph can be reduced to a single blank separator with Collapse multiple empty lines.

When this tool is useful

Tidy pasted text with excessive blank separators, or prepare a line-based list for another tool. Collapse mode is useful for prose because it keeps one separator instead of joining all paragraphs together.

Common mistakes and limitations

  • An apparently empty line can contain spaces or tabs, so basic empty-line removal may leave it intact.
  • Trimming can remove indentation that matters in source code or structured text.

Frequently asked questions

How is collapse different from removing all empty lines?

Collapse retains one blank separator from a consecutive group. Removal drops the matching lines entirely, bringing the surrounding content together.

Will this remove spaces inside sentences?

No. The optional trim affects line edges, while the selected mode handles empty or whitespace-only lines. Internal sentence spacing is not a general normalization target.
