0 / 60 characters · An editorial guideline, not a search-engine character limit. Display width varies.

Your inputs stay in your browser. No account required. Character counts use Unicode code points. Reading: 200 words/minute. Speaking: 130 words/minute.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the text to count.
  2. Compare total characters, characters without whitespace, and UTF-8 bytes.
  3. Choose or adjust a reference limit and inspect the remaining allowance.

Formula & method

Characters count Unicode code points rather than UTF-16 code units. Whitespace is excluded from the no-spaces count. UTF-8 byte count describes encoded file size. Presets are editable reference limits rather than guarantees about platform display.

A practical example

A single emoji may count as one code point but several UTF-8 bytes. A joined emoji sequence can contain several code points while appearing as one symbol.

When this tool is useful

Check a short description, form field, caption, or byte-limited payload before submitting it. Use the measurement required by the destination: visible text length and encoded byte size are not interchangeable.

Common mistakes and limitations

  • The count uses Unicode code points, not visual grapheme clusters or UTF-16 code units.
  • Reference presets cannot guarantee acceptance or display by a platform that uses different counting or rendering rules.

Frequently asked questions

Why can one emoji count as several characters?

Some visible emoji combine multiple Unicode code points, such as a base symbol, skin-tone modifier, or joined sequence. This counter measures those constituent code points.

Why is the byte total larger than the character total?

UTF-8 uses different numbers of bytes for different characters. ASCII typically uses one byte, while many other characters and emoji use multiple bytes.
