How to use this tool

  1. Choose timestamp-to-date or date-to-timestamp conversion.
  2. For numeric input, explicitly choose seconds or milliseconds.
  3. For date input, enter the UTC date and time, then compare the resulting formats.

Formula & method

Unix time measures seconds since 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. Millisecond input is divided by 1,000 for Unix seconds, with fractional seconds rounded down. Date-to-timestamp input is explicitly interpreted as UTC.

A practical example

Unix timestamp 0 is 1 January 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. The equivalent millisecond value is also 0.

When this tool is useful

Inspect application logs, API timestamps, or stored event dates without doing epoch arithmetic manually. Matching the unit used by the source system is essential before comparing two event times.

Common mistakes and limitations

  • A timestamp in milliseconds is 1,000 times its value in seconds.
  • The date-to-timestamp input is UTC; do not paste a local time and assume an automatic time-zone conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my converted date look far from the expected year?

The most common cause is using milliseconds as seconds or the reverse. Check the explicit unit selector and the source API documentation.

What is timestamp zero?

It represents January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC. A displayed local date can differ if another application applies a time-zone offset.
