How to use this tool

  1. Enter a supported HEX, RGB, RGBA, HSL, or HSLA color.
  2. Set alpha and choose the contrast background appropriate for your design.
  3. Convert and compare the channel values, preview, and contrast result.

Formula & method

Parse HEX, RGB(A), or HSL(A) channels and convert between the RGB and HSL models. Complementary color rotates hue 180 degrees. Lighten and darken shift HSL lightness by 10 points. Contrast uses relative luminance after alpha compositing.

A practical example

White against black has a contrast ratio of 21:1. Normal-size text needs at least 4.5:1 to meet WCAG AA contrast; other accessibility requirements still apply.

When this tool is useful

Move a design color between CSS representations or compare a foreground color against its intended background. The preview is useful for checking whether a converted value still represents the expected color.

Common mistakes and limitations

  • Contrast depends on the background, especially when the foreground is translucent.
  • A passing contrast ratio alone does not establish that an entire interface is accessible.

Frequently asked questions

Why does alpha change the contrast ratio?

A translucent foreground blends with its background. The tool computes contrast from the composited color, so the same foreground can behave differently on different surfaces.

Are HEX and RGB different colors?

They are different notations for RGB channel values. Equivalent values describe the same color; rounding during conversion can make the displayed numbers look slightly different.
