How to use this tool

  1. Choose percentage of a value, percentage share, increase, decrease, or difference.
  2. Enter X and Y according to the selected calculation; for a change, enter the old value first.
  3. Calculate and check the explanation so you know which value forms the denominator.

Formula & method

For X% of Y, multiply X by Y and divide by 100. To express X as a percentage of Y, use X ÷ Y × 100. Increase and decrease compare the change against the absolute original value. Percentage difference compares the absolute gap against the mean of the absolute values.

A practical example

20% of 1,500 is 300. A change from 100 to 125 is a 25% increase. The percentage difference between 100 and 125 is approximately 22.22%.

When this tool is useful

Compare quantities, check a mark as a share of a total, or describe a change between reporting periods. Use percentage difference when neither value is the baseline, and percentage increase or decrease when the order of the values matters.

Common mistakes and limitations

  • A change from 10% to 15% is five percentage points, but a 50% relative increase.
  • An increase from zero has no finite percentage because the baseline denominator is zero.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a 20% increase not reversed by a 20% decrease?

The second operation uses a different baseline. Increasing 100 by 20% gives 120; decreasing 120 by 20% gives 96. To return from 120 to 100 requires a decrease of about 16.67%.

When should I use percentage difference?

Use it to compare two values symmetrically. The tool divides the absolute gap by the mean of the absolute values, so swapping the inputs leaves the result unchanged.
